Exceeded my very high expectations...
Perhaps my favorite concert ever was my first Yousuke Yukimatsu show, (and my first trip to this venue), of all the concerts I've been to over the last 30 years.
The show was well-staged -- pleasing layout and lighting, they had crowd-pleasing extras, including throwing several large confetti-filled beachballs into the crowd (disappointed none made their way up to us in the back). They had a few times where the lead singer was hoisted up in the air, where he sang and drummed 30 feet above the crowd, video screen behind the band usually projecting abstract patterns and occasionally overlaying live video of the band shot from interesting angles, etc.
Their set was high-energy, the highlight of the show, however, was the music. The sound was well-mixed and clear, and the band sounded great. They sound great on their album, but in my opinion, they really shine live.
The venue was perfect for them -- large enough to make you feel like you were at an event, but not so large as to make you feel like you were at a WalMart Superstore.
Without a huge catalog of songs to draw from, this concert was on the short side, but the sustained high quality of the performance and the band's showmanship made it feel very satisfying. They have the earnestness and wide-eyed attitude of newcomers, but put on a show with polish and skill that veteran touring acts would envy.
The crowd had a warm and welcoming vibe -- matching the band's -- and everyone seemed to go home happy.
If you'll kick yourself for having passed on the opportunity to see them in venues of this size if these guys become an uber-successful arena act.
